| | Oregon Filbert Squares 1 cup butter or margarine 1 cup sugar 1 egg, separated 2 cups sifted all-purpose flour 1/4 teaspoon ground cardamom 1 cup finely chopped filberts Cream together butter and sugar. Beat in egg yolk. Sift together flour and cardamon and blend into creamed mixture. Spread dough evenly over bottom of jelly-roll pan (15 x 10 inches). Press with palms to make a smooth surface. Beat egg white slightly; brush over top of dough. Sprinkle nuts evenly over surface; press them into the dough. Bake in preheated very slow oven (275 degrees) for 1 hour. While hot, cut into 1 1/2-inch squares. Cool. Makes bout 5 dozen. | | | Greetings!

Sincerely, | | Book Review by Pam G Big Blocks: Quick Quilts 8 Fabulous Quilts with 'Layer Cake' 10"x 10" Squares by Suzanne McNeill If the spring weather makes you think of trading your sewing machine for gardening tools, we have a quilt book for you. "Big Blocks: Quick Quilts" features 8 quick quilts for those rainy, cool days yet to come before summer sunshine arrives! There are a variety of designs for use with "Layer Cakes", those quick 10 inch squares you can buy pre-cut, or you can "do-it-yourself" as the fabric yardage is given for each quilt. The book instructions are clear and include tips for completing each project with ease. I particularly liked the book section titled "Basic Sewing". It never hurts to review the basics, occasionally, to keep yourself current. I made the "Blackbirds in the Garden" project, a combination of piecing and applique, about which the author says: "sweet singing blackbirds flutter above a dazzling appliqued flower in this cheerful wall hanging that is sure to brighten your day". It was a quick and fun project.

Having trouble with patchwork pieces not matching? Maybe you are not using a quilters ¼" seam. A "quilters ¼" seam" is a seam allowance that provides the correct result. Check your seam allowance by stitching together 2 strips of fabric 2" wide by about 6". Open the strips and measure across the width. This should measure 3 ½" for the perfect quilters seam. This is usually a slight 1/4". Adjust the placement of the strips until you are stitching this result and mark your machine bed.
