Wool Applique Bonnie Sullivan Greetings!

Can you believe only 45 days until Christmas?  Scary to think about!  We first have to prepare for Thanksgiving and then it will be the race to Christmas.  Let's see, there's food, gifts, home decorations.  So much to do and, well, so little time!

I finished my first wool project (a Christmas pillow for decoration) and, not only did I enjoy it, but found it relaxing to do.  The image to the left shows a few of Bonnie Sullivan's wool applique projects.  We carry her patterns, some made into kits, as well as a nice variety of colored wools to tantalize and inspire you.  With the long winter evenings ahead, wool applique makes a wonderful lap project while watching TV or listening to music or recorded books.  Bonnie Sullivan's patterns

Recipe:  Crostini with Mushrooms
A scrumptious
Crimini mushrooms
appetizer for holiday entertaining

This adult pleasing recipe comes from our staff member, Linda Hoag.

Crostini With Mushrooms, Prosciutto, and Blue Cheese

Makes about 18

3 Tbsp butter
1/2 pound fresh shiitake mushrooms, stemmed, caps chopped
4 ounces crimini mushrooms, chopped
2 garlic cloves, minced
1/2 cup whipping cream
1/2 cup crumbled blue cheese (about 2 ounces)
1/2 cup chopped thinly sliced prosciutto (about 2 1/2  ounces)

18 1/2 inch thick diagonal bread slices cut from 1 sourdough baguette
Chopped fresh Italian parsley

Melt butter in heavy large skillet over medium-high heat.  Add all mushrooms and garlic and saute' until mushrooms are cooked through and brown, about 10 minutes.  Add cream and boil until liquid is completely absorbed, about 2 minutes, while stirring.
Remove from heat.  Add blue cheese and stir until cheese melts.  Mix in prosciutto.  Season to taste with salt and pepper.  Transfer mushroom topping to bowl.  (Mushroom topping can be made 1 day ahead.)  Cover and refrigerate.

Preheat oven to 375 degrees.  Arrange bread slices on baking sheet.  Bake until just golden, about 5 minutes.  Mound 1 generous tablespoon mushroom topping on each slice.  Return to oven; bake until topping is heated through, about 6 minutes.  Sprinkle with chopped parsley.

Greetings!

Recently while finishing the last few binding stitches on a Halloween quilt that I started more than a year ago, my thoughts wandered to Christmas and what I could do to make the holiday season feel more personal, less commercial.  My husband frequently laments about the appearance of Christmas decorations  long before Halloween and I'm sure you have heard similar complaints.   I'm not sure I have a solution, but I always feel that sewing, crafting and creating some of our gifts and decorations add to the enjoyment of the season.  With that in mind, we present some of the wonderful projects we have available so you can add your own personal touch to your holidays.

Doll Making

Little Helper Elves

Looking for a way to put the spirit back into the holidays?  Nothing could be more fun than hand crafting ornaments or "dolls".  Luckily, we have the very talented Kae Rockwood to help our local customers perfect their doll making skills.  We also have patterns available for those who would like to create these adorable "elves" on their own.
Little Helper Elves

Santa DollOne of Kae's students, Ellen Starr, recently shared with us her Santa made during a class several years ago.  The Santa stands approximately three feet tall, wears a quilted robe,  sports a llama fiber beard and mustach, and carries a velveteen purse and Santa bag.  Ellen says that she adds something new each year to make this a special tradition in their holiday decorations.

Whether it dolls, pillows or a wool craft project, it's not too late to create something special for your holidays!

Tiny Toys to Make

Puppy Love

We couldn't resist this darling stuffed dog and have now gone wild over the kitty too.  From Needlecraft Magazine, Dec. 1928:  "The very young set of the last generation...knew these adorable playthings as 'rag dolls'.  Remember?  And how we did love and cherish them, homemade and homely though they were!  ...One mother of four wee ones says..that there is nothing that gives them half as much joy, no matter what the cost in dimes or dollars as does the inexpensive stuffed plaything new and "different".

We think you'll enjoy making these adorable dogs & cats as much as you'll love gifting them.

Aprons for Gift-GivingMy Neighbor's Apron

A perfect, personalized gift for your favorite woman - an apron.  We think they're darling, fun and always welcome.  Check out our cutest new patterns (shown "Let's Cook apron) and enjoy this excerpt from a 1928 Needlecraft Magazine article:

"No connoisseur of aprons would ever recommend being satisfied with just the practical, workaday kind one must have, be they ever so smartly made and good to look upon.  Hostess aprons to don swiftly and becomingly when serving refreshments in a dress-up gown after bridge or on Sunday evening - just for example - ought to be a part of every well-aproned woman's wardrobe; and even the mere man, who seldom comments on a new frock, will often raise an interested eyebrow at a new and becoming apron."
