Westside Modern Quilt Club - June 2017

Freshly back from four retreat sessions in Washington and Montana, Geri shared crazy country song titles in lieu of a joke. We imagine everyone who went on the retreats had a fun time riffing off the cowboy theme.

The August meeting will be at Millennium Park and we will share our challenge quilts. If you've made a challenge quilt, please download two copies of the entry form, one for Expo and one for our organizational purposes. There is no charge for your entry unless you want it judged or it needs special handling (rolled). At the July meeting we'll talk about getting posters printed at COSTCO of your inspirational quilt.

Kathy White passed on a request from the Metropolitan Patchwork Society. Ruth Ann Marquist is collecting flannel to be used in washable feminine hygiene kits for girls around the world. If you have flannel to donate please bring it to the July meeting and Kathy will collect it. Otherwise contact the MPS.

Our July Speaker was Mary Ann McCammon. She's a local art quilter who has traveled several times to Eldoret, Kenya to help the Beyond Fistula program there.

Mary Ann spoke to us about the project last year and gave us an update which included well deserved growth in the program. A separate program pays for the fistula repair surgeries which helps many young women, and Beyond Fistula helps with after care in the form of counseling, scholarships, and job training. Mary Anne's part, Quilts for Empowerment, is part of a vocational training program sponsored by Beyond Fistula. The quilting program provides obstetric fistula survivors with an opportunity to learn a new skill, gain self-confidence and earn income by making quilts. They are refining their one of a kind product line made from African fabric and personalized with hand stitching using embroidery floss. Products include table mats, table runners, aprons, as well as ornaments and decorative quilts that often tell a woman’s personal story through her stitching and choice of fabric.

They have recently added sturdy tote bags with a "story quilt" panel. The full time seamstresses receive a salary and enrollment in a Business and Savings Training course developed in Africa, which is culturally specific. All have the opportunity to go to school or vocational training as payment. Thank you Mary Ann for giving us insight into the lives of these young women and their efforts to overcome adversity.

Show and Tell:
This month's Show and Tell was short, but sweet.

Linda's quilt was a retirement gift for a friend. All the blocks represent things she hopes the friend will do in the next chapter of their life.

Carole brought two quilts, one made from silk ties and tailor's wool given to her by a friend.

The second was a vintage quilt which she repaired and finished. It's old but has a very modern aesthetic.

Deslie shared a quilt she made using our Elements pattern. It's design perfectly showcased the fussy cut Alison Glass flying geese fabric. Deslie also shared a pro-tip: if your quilts are no larger than lap sized they don't take so long and you can make more of them!

Don't miss our July meeting meeting (last Wednesday of the month at 6:00 pm): Annette McFarlane from our local Studio Art Quilts Association chapter will bring a trunk show of 50 small art quilts for us to enjoy. There will be a huge range of aesthetics and techniques to study.

Shop Hops

It's that time of year again! The Sunshine and Stitches Shop Hop is underway, and The Row by Row Experience is just around the corner. Make your plans to discover new shops and revisit old favorites.

Sunshine and Stitches runs now until July 1, 2017. Download your passport or pick one up at participating shops, such as The Pine Needle. Each shop has a free block kit, plus fun project kits for purchase. There's also drawings at each shop.

Share your shop hopping on social media: https://www.facebook.com/stitchesshophops/

Our July Fourth block can be incorporated into a sampler quilt, or used as a pocket on our fabric basket project.

Row By Row Experience

Row by Row runs June 21st through September 5th, 2017 (you have until October 31st to bring your completed quilt to a participating shop for potential prizes). Simply visit any of the participating shops and receive a free pattern for a row in a quilt. Combine your rows in any way to create a unique quilt that represents the fun you had traveling throughout the summer. Meet up with friends, discover new quilt shops, and have fun collecting rows! Check out the Row by Row website for prize information and all the pertinent details.

The Row by Row theme this year is On The Go! and we're going by trolley in honor of the trolley which connects Lake Oswego to Portland.

No May WMQC

FYI, Westside Modern Quilt Club would normally meet on May 31st (the last wednesday of the month) but because our retreats are happening at about the same time, we won;t be having a meeting this month.

Please join us next month, on June 28th, when we'll be back to our regular schedule.

We're always interested in ideas for speakers or programs, so please let any of us Pinecones know what you want to see and hear.

Thanks!

Small Projects

It's the time of year when it's hard to image surrounding yourself with a big, warm, quilt. But summer time and travels mean visiting friends, exploring quilt shops, and still spending some time at the sewing machine. So, we suggest some smaller projects perfect for giving as gifts, for using those special fabrics you've picked up, and for sewing up something quick and satisfying.

We've got quite a few kits and patterns for a variety of fun projects.

Brand new is this Sew Adorable Fabric Basket which Pam has kitted up in a variety of fabric combos.

We've also got a super cute Iron Caddy and pressing station. Perfect for taking along to sewing retreats or sew days with friends.

The Take Four Placemat pattern is a great way to use all those fat quarters you've been collecting, or pick up one of the Squared Up kits in which we've already coordinated some fabulous fabrics.

And... who can resist a Potato Chip Bag kit? This practical little purse is so cute and easy to make that you won't be able to stop with just one!

Spring/Summer Classes

It's May and our Spring/Summer class session is starting. Check out our class offerings under the Classes tab on our main website, or click here.

There's still room in our new Quiltmaking 101 class with Dawn White, and Linda Reinert is teaching two circle classes. These are the perfect opportunity to learn to quilt from the ground up, or to add a new technique to your sewing "toolbox."

Our Sew With series is a great way to get a little help or encouragement on those projects that may have stumped you, or that you just need the opportunity to get them done. The classes meet once a month with either Pam Raby, Linda Reinert, or Dawn White, who each have many years of sewing and quilting experience to share. Bring whatever project you want to work on, and your instructor will be there to help as needed. It's also a great way to connect with other quilters for camaraderie and sewing accountability!

Sign up online, or in the store. Check back as well because we'll probably be adding other one and two day workshops as the summer progresses.

Fresh Fabrics For Spring

After a post-Puyallup Expo lull, new fabrics are arriving nearly daily!

Who's hungry for sushi? This fresh combo would make fun kitchen accessories like the French Flea Market Apron (which includes a kid size as well as an adult one), accents on towels, or maybe even some fun Pea Pod or other zip bags.

Maker Maker's graphically simple cats and dogs, and a collection of nubby linens from Lecien have a quiet, minimalist color palette perfect for totes and table runners.

Another lovely neutral collection is Destination Paris from Windham Fabrics. Are you dreaming of a European vacation yet?

Check out this purple and orange and blue from Robert Kaufman, Anthology, M&S (Australian), and P&B -- who knew they'd all look so rich and delicious together? Well, we kind of did.

We've refreshed our beachy blues and corals.

We've got a super cute collection of juvenile fabrics from Makower UK, mixed with some of our favorite basics, ready to be made into baby quilts and more!

And, Carrie Bloomston's Dreamer collection is finally here. We're making kits for our Hip To Dream and Lucy's Garden sample quilts, as well as having yardage for you to choose your own adventure!
