Quilts for Cares Northwest

Check out this group of kids who each made a quilt for Cares Northwest. Wow!

Quilts are given to children seen at Cares Northwest,

an evaluation center for abused and neglected kids.

Cares Northwest is part of the Legacy Foundation of hospitals in Portland, Oregon.

Quilts are collected and given to babies to 18 year olds. The need is great.

Abused and neglected children in the program are in need of comforting quilts

as they go through the exams and evaluation process.

Did you know that The Pine Needle originated this program for abused kids many years ago?

You can participate in this amazing program in one of many ways.

You can donate fabric.
You can donate a finished quilt made either from your own fabrics.
You can pick up a kit in the store made up of donated fabric and sew a quilt.
You can join a monthly group at The Pine Needle to work on these quilts

We need quilts in all sizes:

42x42 baby quilts

50x50 small child's quilt

50x72 for a teenager.

Farmers Wife Celebration of Quilts

There are over 60 people making the Farmers Wife Quilt at The Pine Needle.

The first classes started in January of 2010, more started in March and then again in the summer.

Here is our first celebration of quilts.

The women gathered on Thursday night for a potluck supper and show and tell of their quilts.

Many many hours went into these quilts, and no two are alike.

September always feels like the start of a new year. I guess that comes from all the years that the new school year, whether for ourselves, our children or grandchildren, meant a new beginning. Fresh Corn-Rice Salad
(This is one of Pam Grogan's summer salad favorites. The recipe comes from Better Homes and Gardens)

ingredients
4 ears fresh corn
1 1/2 cups cooked rice, cooled
1 pint cherry or grape tomatoes, halved
1 cup fresh arugula
1 small red onion, cut in thin wedges
1 jalapeno pepper, thinly slice
2 Tbsp. rice vinegar
2 Tbsp. olive oil

directions
1. Husk corn, remove silk; rinse. Cook corn in boiling, lightly salted water for 3 min. Remove corn; let cool. Cut corn off the cob in planks (see note).
2. Combine cooked rice, tomatoes, arugula, onion and jalapeno pepper. Transfer to serving bowl; top with corn.
3. Drizzle with vinegar and olive oil. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Serve at room temperature. Makes 10-12 servings.

Note: To cut planks, place an ear on its side on a cutting board. Holding the corn firmly with fingers away from the blade, cut off a side of the corn. Rotate and repeat until all sides are removed. Use a spatula to gently move planks to salad.

Last year I hung my Halloween quilt on the porch to share with all the "trick or treaters" and their parents. It added a unique decorative touch, for sure. Kids and adults had great fun looking at it. Luckily, we have a covered porch so rain isn't an issue.

Our 5 Top Selling Patterns

Recently a customer asked, "What are your top selling patterns?" That got us to thinking. We could have guess, but we really couldn't point to facts and figures to prove our assumptions. So with that question in mind, we did a little research, gathered some facts and calculated our "top five list." We thought we would share the results with you. Each of these patterns, we think, has one common element that has made them so appealing to hundreds of customers. Each of these patterns allows the quilter to create a quilt that highlights today's beautiful fabrics.

Recipe
Chicken Divan
Pam Grogan says her family loves this recipe from A Taste of Oregon cookbook.

8 chicken breasts

1 tsp. lemon juice

Two 10-ounce pkgs frozen broccoli spears or 1 1/2 pounds fresh broccoli

1/2 tsp. Curry powder or 1/2 tsp. Oregano

Two 10 1/2-ounce cans cream of chicken soup

Two 6-ounce jars marinated artichoke hearts, drained (optional)
1 cup mayonnaise

Slivered almonds (optional)

Cook, debone, and dice the chicken breasts. Cook broccoli until tender and spread it in a 9x13 inch baking dish. Distribute chicken over broccoli. Combine soup, mayonnaise, lemon juice, Curry powder, and artichoke hearts. Spread mixture over the chicken and sprinkle slivered almonds on top.

Bake at 350 F for 30- 40 minutes.

Serves 6-8

Variation: Before baking, sprinkle the following over the chicken and broccoli: 3/4 cup shredded sharp Cheddar cheese,1/2 cup bread crumbs.

This recipe can be divided in half and baked in a 8 x 8 baking dish.

Pam says, "When I make this, I use chicken fillets (no bones), no artichokes or nuts. I sprinkle seasoned bread crumbs on top. I either make this as a full recipe or half depending on if my son is home. He loves this!"

Hints and Tips
from Pam Raby

Here are a few tips for knowing when to change your sewing machine's needle:

A dull needle sounds a little noisy, almost like the needle goes "thunk" through the fabric.
Is the needle bent? A needle should lay perfectly flat on a table. If it "bows", definitely replace it.
Does the needle have a barb? Hold the top of the needle in one hand, then slide your fingers along the needle going from shank to tip. Can you feel a barb on the tip? If so, you need a new needle. This usually happens to me when I hit a pin.

Double Diamonds

During the year our sewing notion vendors show us many new and different ideas, and this one was just too much fun not to share with our customers. By using three fabrics, fusible web and the Double Diamond ruler, you can create wonderful diamond patterns to add distinctive, dimensional diamonds to quilts whether in the blocks, on the sashings or borders. You can also follow the same techniques to embellish clothing, or decorate scrapbook pages. Let your imagination run wild!

Rain,RAIN, rain! Last Sunday's comic

Stone Soup (link to Stone Soup) captures our thoughts on the weather. So with this edition of our newsletter, we thought we would bring you a bit of Spring, no matter the weather outside.

The background that you see peaking around the edges of the email is a new line of fabric from Free Spirit called Jeanvenve Linen. Frequently referred to as a decorator weight fabric, it is 100% cotton, looks and feels like linen and comes in a 54" width. Jeanvenve's Floral Birds has such a clean crisp feel of Spring, that it was love at first sight for our staff. Pillows, like magic, appeared the next morning. Thank you, Janet P.!

Even though the weather does not let us think it is actually Spring, the bird watchers amongst our staff tell us our summer aviary friends have started to arrive. The fabric manufacturers, including Free Spirit, must have envisioned our feathered friends' return as this year's spring theme. We have received several beautiful fabric lines featuring birds. Below you can see a new quilt we've made from Benartex's Meadowlark fabric line.

Ideas from the Sewing and Stitchery Expo
Tumbling Blocks and more....

The Puyallup, WA Sewing and Stitchery Expo provides us with an opportunity to see a wide variety of sewers and quilters, to observer what interests them, and to notice buying trends. Our new five yard quilts created a lot of activity. We will be showing you those in our Spring catalog. The Maywood Woolies, which we stock all year around, delighted a ton of shoppers, many who do not have access to flannels. Pam's Meadowlark quilt kit (seen on your right) sold out immediately. Our new Jungle Panel quilt was a hit with moms and grandma's (see below). In our Notion's booth Marci Baker displayed several of her Tumbling Block quilts and demonstrated her strip piecing techniques, packing our booth with careful listeners. Mimi notes:

I like these cookies because they stay nice and soft! The secret is soaking the raisins!

Combine these ingredients and let them stand at room temperature for 1 hour

1 cup shortening, margarine or butter

1 cup packed brown sugar

1 cup granulated sugar

2 1/2 cups sifted flour

1/2 cup chopped nuts (optional)

Cream shortening and sugars. Sift flour with dry ingredients and mix into a creamed mixture

Add raisins, nuts and oatmeal.

Bake 10-12 minutes at 350F

Working in a quilt shop can be such fun. The day we received this delightfully happy jungle panel and its accompanying fabrics, our Pinecone, Nancy went home and made this hug- gable child's quilt. She even wrote instructions, so the rest of us can easily make our little ones jungle quilts. Then Geri took our jungle panel kits to Puyallup and Expo-ers loved it too. Success is so much fun! We've ordered more fabric for more kits in hopes you will like our little quilt too!

Spring seems much to slow in arriving this year, so we decided to hurry it up a bit by introducing summer birds into our shop with Pam's Meadowlark quilt. The shoppers at the Sewing and Stitchery Expo in Puyallup two weeks ago just loved this quilt. Our Pinecone, Pam, combined the Sidelight pattern with the classical lines of the Meadowlark collection to create this stunning quilt. Although the image suggest the fabric background color is black, in actuality the color is somewhere between a deep brown and a charcoal. The Meadowlark series also comes is an aubergine and a sea foam green.

Hints and Tips

Rotary Cutter Care

A reminder from our teacher, Pam Raby

Rotary cutting is easier if you clean and oil the cutter periodically.

First, disassemble your rotary cutter.
Place each part in a row on a flat surface so you know how to reassemble the cutter.
I prefer to place the blade flat on my cutting mat, then use a scrap of fabric or paper towel to clean it, wiping from the center of the blade to the outside so I don't cut my fingers or drop the blade.
When I reassemble the cutter, I put one drop of sewing machine oil near the center of the blade so it rotates easily while cutting.

If excess force is needed to cut through a couple layers of fabric, it's time for a fresh, sharp rotary cutting blade!

Steady Betty Bands

Here's a picture of Sandi using them at our Fall Open House.

These bands give you control of your fabric when free motion quilting.

They slip over your hands with foam side in your palm.

They are light weight and comfortable.

Unlike gloves, you never need to remove them to thread needles, wind bobbins, etc.

The Mysterious Rose

Mystery Quilt

Rhapsody in Bloom (Pink)

It's not too late to take part in our mystery quilt adventure, The Mysterious Rose. You can join whether you live in Lake Oswego, OR or Oswego, NY. You can choose your own fabric or choose one of our kits with Maywood Studio's Rhapsody in Bloom fabrics. The clues are sent once a month for six months. On August 13, bring you quilt and share in a pot luck lunch and be ready to "ooh and aah" at others interpretation. If you can not make the pot luck, send us a picture of your quilt. We will share The Mysterious Rose quilts on our blog.

Mocha Chocolate Chip Scones

Pam Raby's Scone Recipe

Pre-heat oven to 425°F.

Butter a baking sheet. In a large bowl, combine:

2 cups all-purpose flour

1/3 cup sugar

2 tsp baking powder

½ tsp salt

Cut in ½ cup

chilled, unsalted

butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.

Separately, in a small bowl, combine:

2 eggs

¼ cup sour cream or lite sour cream

1 tsp vanilla extract

1 tsp instant espresso powder

Add the egg mixture to the dry ingredients and stir just until combined. The dough will be sticky. Stir in ¾ cups miniature semisweet chocolate chips, kneading with lightly floured hands. Do not over work the dough. Pat the dough into a circle ~8" in diameter on a lightly floured countertop. Cut the dough into 8 wedges. Place the wedges on the baking sheet. Optional: lightly brush the dough with milk and sprinkle with granulated sugar. Bake until the scones are golden brown, ~15-20 minutes. Transfer scones to a wire rack to cool slightly. Serve warm. These scones are great with fresh strawberries or raspberries and a good cup of coffee.

Did you know...

Quilting tip from Pam Raby

To save time when cutting lots of same size strips, first cut a wide strip that's a multiple of the desired width then subcut into narrow strips of the desired width.

For example:

For 3 strips 2" wide, cut a 6" wide strip then slide the ruler over 2" and cut. Slide the ruler over 2" again and cut the 3rd strip.
For 3 strips 2½" wide, cut a 7½" strip then slide the ruler over 2½" and cut, slide another 2½" and cut the 3rd strip.

It is faster to "slide and cut" than to reposition the fabric and/or ruler each time you cut a strip. Try it and see!

Use Up That Stash
String Quilts

An all to frequent lament we hear from our customers contains the phrase, "too much stash." So, if you looking for ideas for a fun sewing project, try making string quilt squares. You can then take the squares and combine them to make table mats, table runners, tablecloths, bags, clothing or full quilts. I utilized my stash of Christmas fabrics for making a string quilt tablecloth. It festively decorated our dinning table during the holiday season.

Don't know how to make a string quilt? Linda will help you get started in her String Quilt Class, Friday, March 25. It really is a simple and fun way to be creative with your stash.

West Linn Library Quilt Show

Visit West Linn Library for a Quilt Show featuring Judy Liebo (one of our customers!)

The West Linn Public Library will host an exhibit featuring the work of Judy Liebo during the month of January. The exhibit will run January 4–29 in the library’s Community Room which is open to the public when not in use, and always open on Sundays, noon – 5:00 p.m.

For as long as Judy Liebo can remember, she has been making things with her hands. She started off in junior high baking bread and sewing skirts. These days her focus has been on fabric manipulation, usually quilting. She feels inspired by everything from carpet patterns to sunsets.

Liebo's quilts have won prizes several times at the Northwest Quilt Expo. She enjoys the freedom of size and pattern that comes with quilting and the versatility of display options, be it on a wall or on a bed. “There is something so satisfying to my soul to finish a quilt, step back and say, 'Yes…that’s what I saw'".

The Library is located at at 1595 Burns Street, West Linn, Oregon. Here's the map.

The Mysterious Rose

Tortellini Meatball Soup

(editor's note: Pam shared this delicious soup recipe with the staff and it's received The Pinecones' seal of approval. It's easy to make, simple to alter for your family's preferences, and tastes wonderful on a cold winter's night.)

Even though this soup is extra quick to make, it's still a bonus that it's flexible enough to prepare up to three days ahead and keep refrigerated. To save more time, buy prepared fresh or frozen meat balls at your local market.

tortellini meatball soup

Prep: 25 min., Cook: 7 min.

1 cup chopped sweet onion (1 small)
2 medium carrots, quartered lengthwise and sliced
3 cloves garlic, minced
1 tbsp. olive oil or cooking oil
1 32-oz. all-natural chicken or beef broth
1/2 cup water
1 recipe homemade meatballs (below) or 1/2 of a 16-oz. pkg. Frozen Italian-style cooked meatballs
1 9-oz. pkg. refrigerated 4-cheese tortellini
1 tsp. Italian seasoning, crushed
3 cups chopped fresh spinach leaves or 1/2 of a 1o-oz. pkg. frozen chopped spinach, thawed and drained
3 tbsp. chopped bottled roasted red sweet pepper
1 tbsp. lemon juice (optional)
salt and ground black pepper
1 tbsp. snipped fresh basil (optional)

In a Dutch oven cook and stir onion, carrots, and garlic in hot olive oil for about 3 minutes or until tender. Add chicken broth and water. Bring to boiling. Add meatballs, tortellini, and Italian seasoning. Return to boiling. Reduce heat and simmer, uncovered, for 4 minutes. Add spinach, red pepper, and lemon juice. Simmer, uncovered, for about 3 minutes more or until tortellini are done. Season with salt and pepper to taste and stir in basil, if desired. Ladle into bowls. Makes 4 to 6 servings.

MAKE AHEAD: Cover and chill prepared soup up to 4 hours ahead; reheat in saucepan. For longer storage, prepare as directed except do not add tortellini and basil and use the frozen chopped spinach option. Cool soup, cover, and chill for up to 3 days. To reheat, bring soup just to boiling; stir in tortellini and simmer 7 minutes. Stir in basil, if desired, before serving.

HOMEMADE MEATBALLS: In a medium mixing bowl combine 1/3 cup fine dry bread crumbs and 8 ounces bulk sweet Italian sausage. Shape into thirty-six 3/4-inch meatballs (use a melon baller for portioning). Use as directed (don't cook first).

This last weekend's Open House provided a wonderful opportunity for quilters to experience new products, learn new techniques, and meet some of the quilting experts. In the image to your right, you catch a glimpse of Roxanne Cummings-Basey sharing her Electric Fence quilt with Karla Alexander. Karla designed the quilt for her Color Shuffle book and was delighted to see Roxanne's interpretation of her quilt.
